Vladimir de TERLIKOWSKI (1873-1951)

"Bouquet of Anemones"

Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated 1934 lower left,

Beautiful work by the Polish painter Vladimir de Terlikowski (Włodzimierz Terlikowski) which represents a vase of anemones on a yellow background.
The painter uses bright colors and plays on contrasts to represent the nuances of color of the petals of the flowers.
The knife technique he uses allows to give relief to his painting.

Born in Poraj in a noble family from the Warsaw region, Terlikowski discovered the artistic world through his numerous travels in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and North Africa.
Following brief studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and in the Parisian studio of Jean-Paul Laurens, his first works close to Fauvism brought him to the attention of the Bernheim gallery.
The painter settled in Montparnasse where he was a contemporary of Modigliani, Soutine, Picasso, Derain and Vlaminck. His technique is recognizable by his use of the palette knife and has been compared to the work of Cézanne and Renoir. He was a member of the Murol School (1910 to 1925) whose main sources of inspiration were drawn from Victor Charreton and Léon Boudal.

Vladimir de Terlikowski exhibited his works at the Bernheim Gallery, the Charpentier Gallery in Paris and at the Salon d'Automne in 1912, 1913 and 1919. He painted portraits of notable contemporaries such as Foujita, Bourdelle and Stacia Napierkowska.

The bankers David David-Weill, regent of the Banque de France and Henri Nouvion, administrator and general director of the Banque de l'Afrique occidentale, gave Wladimir de Terlikowski their financial support throughout his life.
He was named Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor in 1920.

His works are now preserved in various museums in France: Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, Museum of Painters of the Murol School in Murol, Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, Museum of Fine Arts of Troyes,...
