VERDILHAN André (1881-1963)

"Basket of apples and bunch of grapes"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,

Beautiful colorful still life by the Marseille painter André Verdilhan which represents a still life with a basket of apples and a bunch of grapes grapes in a landscape. This work with its powerful colors shows us the influence of the work of his painter brother.

Younger brother of the painter Louis Mathieu Verdilhan, André Verdilhan took classes at the Marseille School of Fine Arts directed by the painter Alphonse Moutte. He particularly distinguished himself in sculpture and continued his training in Paris with the Italian sculptor Filippo Calaross. It was as a sculptor that he presented busts and masks at his first exhibitions.
From 1913, he regularly exhibited sculptures and paintings in Parisian galleries and at the Salon d'Automne, strongly influenced by the work of his brother. He became an official naval painter in 1936 and decorated the liner “Normandie”.
After 1945, he devoted himself exclusively to painting and exhibited regularly in events and galleries in Provence, particularly in Marseille.

Dimensions: 38 x 46 cm without frame and 46 x 54 cm with a gilded wooden frame.
