"The workshop of the painter Félix Ziem in Martigues"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Annotated and countersigned with the artist's initials on the back of the canvas.
Beautiful luminous work by the painter Julien Gustave Gagliardini which represents a rare view of the workshop of the painter Félix Ziem in Martigues. On a sunny summer day, the painter represented in the foreground on the right the workshop of the painter Félix Ziem (1821-1911) in an oriental spirit on the banks of the Chenal de Caronte.
In the background, we can see the town of Martigues with its Sainte-Marie Madeleine church.
In an impressionist style, the artist used a palette of bright colors deposited in small harmonious touches and to play on the play of light.
This work perfectly represents the Provencal landscape and the light of its region.
A student of Cogniet, Julien Gustave Gagliardini began at the Salon of 1869 where he obtained several awards in 1883, 1884 and 1886. He also received a medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and 1900.
In 1893, he was made a knight of the Legion of honor.
Originally from Mulhouse in Haut-Rhin, the artist regularly comes to Provence to paint landscapes, as shown in his paintings kept in museums.
His works are kept in numerous museums in Lyon, Marseille, Reims, Rochefort, Arras, Evreux..
Note: Two old small restorations visible on the back, without impact, should be noted.
Dimensions: 46 x 65 cm without frame and 60 x 80 cm with its original Louis XV style frame in gilded wood.
